Boy Dies Days After Swimming In 'Dry Drowning' Case

One family is mourning the loss of their 4-year-old son after doctors say he passed away from "dry drowning" a week after swimming.

Francisco Delgado III reportedly began showing unusual symptoms after swimming at the dike over Memorial Day weekend, but his parents didn't initially think anything of it. On Saturday, he complained of shoulder pain, then woke up from a nap and suddenly stopped breathing.

"The lungs are irritated and start to secrete fluid", explained Dr. Lewis Maharam, a sports medicine specialist.

"Your child's airways open up, letting water into his lungs, where it builds up, causing a condition called pulmonary edema", WebMD states.

Dry drowning occurs after a person inhales water through the mouth or nose and the liquid enters the lungs, Purva Grover, medical director of Cleveland Clinic Children's pediatric emergency departments, told USA Today.

According to WebMd, both dry drowning and secondary drowning have the same symptoms, which include coughing, chest pain, trouble breathing, and feeling extremely exhausted.

Dry drowning deaths are rare, making up for only one to two percent of all drowning cases.

Drowning, in general, is the second leading cause of accidental death for children ages 1-14 years old, and the fifth leading cause for people of all ages, the CDC says.

"He was full of life", said his mother, Tara Delgado. Gio's father said a doctor told him his son would not have made it through the night.

His parents say the four-year-old was briefly knocked over by a wave while playing in shallow water but got back up and kept playing.

The news comes almost a week after little Frankie died in a Houston hospital of dry drowning (also known as secondary drowning). "It happens when someone breathes in small amounts of water during a struggle in the water, which makes the airway muscles spasm and breathing becomes hard", a warning from Dell Children's described.

The Delgados are now urging other parents to keep an eye out for their children, even after they've left the water and the swimsuit comes off. "He was loved by so many people ... the world lost a attractive soul".

A relative has set up a GoFundMe page to help raise enough money to cover Frankie III's funeral costs. "The world lost a attractive soul", the page read.
