Brooks Koepka caps a record week with US Open title

"But he just said a few things - I'll win if I stay patient and just keep doing what I'm doing". But Koepka birdied 14, 15 and 16 to pull away.

He walked to the 18th green to a rousing ovation and left it as the U.S. Open clubhouse leader, though at five under par Steve Stricker eventually finished 11 strokes behind victor Brooks Koepka.

Brooks Koepka shot a 5-under 67 to finish at 16-under 272 and match Rory McIlroy's tournament record for most shots under par.

The resulting birdie reduced his deficit to playing partner Koepka to four shots, Koepka having followed birdies on the first and second with another from 35 feet on the eighth. "I feel comfortable. Being in contention in a major is new and I´m excited", said Thomas. They are 25, 28 and 24 years old and ranked Nos. Without a card on any tour when he got out of FSU, Koepka filled his passport on the Challenge Tour with stamps from Kazakhstan and Kenya, Scotland and Spain, India and Madeira Island. He had been on the road for so long, in so many countries, and was feeling lonely.

"I just couldn't stand the fact that I had only won once" on Tour, he said.

"If you had told me I was going to shoot 12-under this year at a U.S. Open and not win, I would have taken the bet for sure", he said. Koepka takes home $2.16 million, the largest single-day earnings in golf.

The low scoring went much deeper than Koepka's final score. In the first 116 U.S. Opens, there had been two. South Korea´s Kim Si-Woo was one behind Fowler on nine under after also shooting 68, while three players - Patrick Reed, Russell Henley and Charley Hoffman were on eight under.

The week ended with 31 players under par, breaking the record of 28 at Medinah in 1990. This was their U.S. Open to step forward and demonstrate the broad sweep of 20-something talent that fills the game.

For Bill Cosby, 2nd sex assault trial ahead
In Cosby's case, that could have involved the more than 60 other women who have accused him of assaults dating to the 1960s. They attacked the judge, in a letter from Cosby's wife Camille, as "arrogant" and Steele as "heinous" and "ambitious".

Rickie Fowler, who is two shots back, said after his round Saturday that he was hoping the wind would pick up to make the course tougher. Later that year, he finished 10th in the British Open and 5th in the PGA Championship.

"I was pretty content making pars on the front nine because I knew the kind of day it was", Harman said. "You have to measure success in different ways, not just by winning, because that doesn't happen a whole lot".

That has been a source of considerable discussion all week, as Erin Hills yielded a record number of sub-par scores, a major record-tying 63 and double the number of players reaching double-digits under par than in all the previous U.S. Opens combined.

"Well, it wasn't going to be like yesterday, regardless", Thomas said, acknowledging that record-setting days don't come around all that often.

Brooks Koepka played the role of a world beater today, coming from behind by four shots starting the day to shoot a 66.

Thomas bogeyed three of the first five holes and tied for ninth at 8 under, eight shots out of the lead.

Koepka became the seventh straight first-time victor of a major championship, and it was the first time since 1998-2000 that Americans won their national championship three straight years.

7 Players finished 10 under or better; before this year, that would have won all but two U.S. Opens. He finished the tournament tied for second with Hideki Matsuyama at 12 under par.
