Horrific Fire Ravages London Apartment Block, Kills At Least 12

At least 12 people are confirmed dead in a massive fire which ripped through a London tower block on Wednesday, police said.

One person could be seen looking out of a section of the building, just below a burnt-out floor, with a piece of clothing dangling from the window frame.

The London police say there may still be people in the building who are unaccounted for.

Boutrig said her friend's brother, wife, and children lived in the building and that her friend was waiting to find out if they were OK.

More than 200 firefighters were sent to the scene but Jody said they struggled to reach those inside the building, who were unable to leave.

Some residents screamed for help from behind upper-floor windows, some tried to throw children to safety, as flames raced through the high-rise Grenfell Tower block of apartments in the north Kensington district just before 1 a.m. (0000 GMT).

The dense smoke filling the corridors meant she was unable to get to safety with her son Abem (5) and husband until the fire brigade arrived.

"I don't know what happened to her". She left with all six of them.

The witness said the caring mum wrapped the baby in what seemed like a sheet or blanket and threw the young baby out of the window.

London fire services managed to evacuate numerous residents - but entire floors of people were still unaccounted for more than 16 hours after the first rescuers arrived. Officials said it could be days before an investigation could yield any hint of what caused the fire or why it spread so quickly.

The block had recently undergone an 8.7 million pound ($11.08 million) refurbishment of the exterior, which included new external cladding and replacement windows.

Up to 600 people may have been inside the building's 120 apartments at the time the blaze broke out. Prime Minister Theresa May's Downing Street office said she was "deeply saddened by the tragic loss of life" in the fire. Twenty-two-year-old passerby Sajad Jamalvatan said he didn't notice fire alarms ringing, only that the fire spread incredibly fast: "Seeing people die in front of you." he trailed off. "We always take all concerns seriously and these will form part of our forthcoming investigations", it said. Others said they had warned repeatedly about fire safety in the block.

He said: "The fire started happening on third floor, we called the fire bridge who came 20 minutes later, and then the whole thing just went up. She is now breaking her heart".

Burning debris cascaded from the blazing building. He said he was alerted to the fire not by fire alarms but by people on the street below, shouting "don't jump, don't jump". We believe that our attempts to highlight the seriousness of this event were covered up by the KCTMO with the help of the [Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea] Scrutiny Committee who refused to investigate the legitimate concerns of tenants and leaseholders.
