"Wonder Woman" soars on Rotten Tomatoes

It's official - "Wonder Woman" is a summer blockbuster! According to Box Office Mojo, Wonder Woman ranked 16th on the list of comic book adaptations' opening weekends - sixth if you don't count sequels - and could end up taking in around $300 million throughout its theatrical run.

The film, starring Gadot as the beloved Amazonian warrior, had a stronger opening than a number of its male-focused Marvel counterparts, including Iron Man, Thor, Guardians of the Galaxy, Captain America and their sequels, and DC predecessor Man of Steel. Costing about $149 million to make, Wonder Woman received a strong A CinemaScore from audiences.

The movie is directed by Patty Jenkins and features Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman, Chris Pine as Steve Trevor, David Thewlis as Sir Patrick, Robin Wright as Antiope and Danny Huston as Ludendorff.

It also broke the opening box office record for a movie directed by a woman, pulling in around US$101m (NZ$200m) at the U.S. box office alone, easily eclipsing the previous record held by Sam Taylor-Johnson's Fifty Shades of Grey, which debuted to US$85.1m in 2015.

"Wonder Woman" is now playing nationwide.

While sitting down with Katie Couric for an interview with Yahoo News, Gadot was happy to discuss how the movie has become a symbol of female empowerment and said who she thinks would win in a fight between Thor and Diana Prince (Diana, duh). "I made 'Wonder Woman.' Now I want to make 'Wonder Woman 2.' It's a lovely story to tell, an important time to tell it and with people that I love". But the person who's not me at all, who lives inside of me. has heard people say for many years, 'Ah, nobody would go see a female superhero film, women don't like action, ' all those things. As far as other characters are concerned, making the story set in present day opens up the possibility of a few cameos from other DC characters (even if Wonder Woman only bothers with a single, subtle Justice League Easter egg). "It's a handsome story to tell, an important time to tell it and with people that I love".
