Uber fires executive accused of stealing Google's self-driving auto secrets

"Alphabet and Waymo have accused Uber and Otto of stealing Waymo's trade secrets and intellectual property, and of infringing on patents related to lidar, a technology that autonomous vehicles use to 'see, '" explained Business Insider this month.

"The New York Times reported first on Levandowski's firing, which was made official to employees via an internal staff email circulated on Tuesday", announced Tech Crunch this week.

Anthony Levandowski, earlier worked on self-driving auto technology at Waymo, owned by Alphabet. Levandowski was part of Waymo before he joined Uber.

UBER Technologies Inc said on Tuesday it fired the technology whiz it had hired to lead its self-driving unit, Anthony Levandowski, after he failed to comply with a court order to hand over documents at the center of a legal dispute between Uber and Alphabet Inc's (GOOGL.O) Waymo unit.

Waymo claims he stole trade secrets by downloading more than 14,000 documents before he left.

Levandowski is not a defendant, but his actions are at the heart of Alphabet's lawsuit against Uber. However, he has asserted his Fifth Amendment rights for concern of potential criminal charges.

Uber affirms its technology is different to Waymo's and states there is not evidence the files are on its servers; however its search did not include Mr Levandowski's computer.

An spokeswoman said Uber, which has never denied that he took the Waymo documents, has urged Levandowski to "fully cooperate".

The court had asked Uber to return all the "pilfered" files related to the technology by the end of the month.
