Plane catches fire, prompts Newark airport to close

New Jersey's Newark Airport has reopened after temporarily closing Tuesday night when a plane engine caught fire.

The unruly passenger "refused to comply with crew member instructions and became increasingly disruptive when asked to deplane the aircraft", United Airlines said.

Of the three minor injuries, one person reported an ankle injury, Guerin told CNN.

But at 9:38 p.m. the airport tweeted, "Newark Airport is temporarily closed due to deployment of emergency chutes on a plane with an apparent engine fire". The passengers were ferried back to the terminal and would be put on later flights, he added. "The crew immediately deployed the slides and evacuated the aircraft".

Three people suffered minor injuries, according Neal Buccino, spokesman for the Port Authority of NY and New Jersey.

United Flight 1579 typically departs around 8:30 p.m. from the NJ airport, landing in San Francisco International Airport before midnight local time.

He finally relents, but not before berating some female passengers and crew, calling one passenger "Hillary" (lol) and "lesbian".

The Austin Fire Department was on standby at the incident and the airport says no one was injured. Fellow passengers greeted him with shouts of "Lock him up!" when he was escorted off the plane.

The airport was closed for nearly two hours as the Boeing 757 jet was towed to the United hangar and its passengers were shuttled by bus to Terminal C.
