Philadelphia DA nominee would stop seeking death penalty

Larry Krasner, the civil rights attorney who won the Democratic nomination for Philadelphia district attorney Tuesday, said he'll welcome outsiders into the office that he hopes to occupy in January.

Krasner says he would recruit top legal minds from around the country to join the 600-person office.

"We have a really diverse pool of people who have worked hard to raise a lot of money".

The longtime defense attorney was asked about comments that John McNesby, president of the police union, FOP Lodge 5, made to the Philadelphia Daily News after Krasner was declared victor of the primary election.

Krasner also traded verbal jabs with the president of the police officers union.

On Wednesday afternoon, Krasner balked at that allegation, even suggesting that, by hinting that officers should not perform their jobs, McNesby was advocating a criminal dereliction of duty. "A society that builds people up instead of tearing them down".

"It's irresponsible to suggest that law enforcement officers, who are paid by taxpayers, would not do what they are required and ordered to do by the police commissioner, but would still be taking home their paychecks - that's just a unusual thing to say", he said.

Shannon McMurray told the jury her client responded appropriately to a "rapidly evolving, tense and stressful situation". In the videos, Crutcher can be seen with his hands in the air and walking away from Shelby before he was shot.

Krasner says he has spoken with Police Commissioner Richard Ross and is confident they can work together. "But they don't control what the police do".

"I'm delighted about working with the rank and file", Krasner said.

"Donald Trump is not a big fan of free speech", Krasner said.

"There are really good people in that office, and really good people in that office want things to be better there", he said.

Krasner campaigned on a progressive platform, including ending mass incarceration, the death penalty, the war on drugs, and civil asset forfeiture, and pushing thorough investigation of police misconduct.

But according to Philadelphia Reentry Coalition Director Aviva Tevah, "The District Attorney's Office has been part of the Coalition and we expected that to continue regardless of who the new DA is".

The other candidates are Michael Untermeyer, who previously ran as a Republican; Municipal Court Judge Teresa Carr Deni, who once sparked criticism by comparing the alleged rape of a prostitute to a theft case; and Republican Beth Grossman, who switched parties.
