UK Parliament approves Prime Minister's early election call

Britain's Prime Minister Theresa May has picked an election date for which her Opposition will struggle to prepare for and which its leader, Jeremy Corbyn, may not recover from.

Experts predict that her ruling Conservative Party could win around 100 more seats at the election on 8 June, which should bolster support for her Brexit plan - a prospect that has strengthened the pound.

Three weekend opinion polls put the Conservatives about 20 points ahead of Labour, while Britain second female prime minister also has strong personal support.

A European Commission spokesman said the "real political" negotiations on Brexit will start after the election.

Just as Britain thought it was tuning up for two years of tricky talks with the European Union, the country now finds itself in the middle of a full blown general election, coming up on June 8. The talks are expected to be hard.

Earlier, May said holding an election in June, rather than as scheduled in 2020, would "deliver a more secure future for our country" as it negotiates its departure from the EU.

She added: "It is only with the Conservatives that you get the strong and stable leadership that this country needs to see us through Brexit and beyond".

Dr. Rodney Shakespeare made the remarks on Wednesday, after the UK Parliament voted in favor of May's proposal for snap elections a day earlier.

So far, and it is early days, investors think May will end up with a bigger majority in Parliament, giving her a potentially stronger hand in the Brexit negotiations with the other 27 European Union states.

Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn has rallied activists in key target seat Croydon Central with a speech in which he highlighted a string of recent policy promises to build council houses, help carers and boost the minimum wage.

British Prime Minister Theresa May speaks during Prime Ministers questions in the House of Commons in London.

But George Osborne, the Conservative former chancellor of the Exchequer, will not run again, according to The London Evening Standard, the newspaper that has hired Osborne as its new editor.

In calling on Tuesday for an early election, May reversed numerous pledges that she would wait until 2020 to hold the next national vote.

Mrs May appealed directly to the electorate, asking them to "put their trust" in her and give her the "mandate to fight for Britain".

"She expects a coronation and not a contest", Farron said, urging voters to back his strongly pro-EU party to stop a Conservative landslide. "The election gives the British people the chance to change direction".

Now that lawmakers have approved the election, Parliament will be dissolved at midnight on May 2, 25 working days before election day.

The decision means that the election campaign can now begin in earnest. You'll be giving her a mandate to follow her extraordinarily reckless "no deal is better than a bad deal" rhetoric through to it's seemingly inevitable and economically ruinous conclusion.

"Indeed, the Prime Minister called out the then incumbent, who did not show up for some of those debates".

Downing Street knows they will take a certain amount of flak for the decision not to play ball, and the opposition parties are of course relishing every opportunity to say that the PM is too frightened to defend her record.
